Global Tragedy: Crans-Montana Fire Kills 40; Sparklers in Champagne Cited as Cause
By Lions Roar News World Desk
CRANS-MONTANA, SWITZERLAND (January 3, 2026) — The Alpine ski resort of Crans-Montana remains in a state of “apocalyptic” shock following a New Year’s Eve fire that claimed the lives of 40 people and left over 100 others with horrific burns. In a desperate race to save lives, Swiss authorities have begun medically evacuating dozens of critically injured survivors to specialized burn units across Europe as domestic facilities reach breaking point.
🔥 The “Death Trap”: How Sparklers Sparked Disaster
Investigators are closing in on the cause of the blaze that gutted the popular bar, Le Constellation, in the early hours of Thursday. Chief Prosecutor Beatrice Pilloud revealed that evidence points to a celebratory gesture gone horribly wrong.
- The Trigger: Revellers waving sparklers or Bengal candles attached to Champagne bottles near the bar’s low, soundproofed wooden ceiling.
- Rapid Spread: Videos show the ceiling igniting within seconds. Heartbreakingly, some footage shows revellers continuing to dance for several moments, unaware of the inferno spreading above them.
- The Aftermath: Panic ensued as hundreds of young people—mostly in their 20s—tried to smash windows to escape. Witnesses described the scene as “war” and an “apocalypse.”
🚁 International Rescue: The Great Medical Evacuation
With 119 people injured—most in critical condition—Switzerland’s specialized burn centers have been overwhelmed.
The EU Response:
EU Commissioner for Crisis Management, Hadja Lahbib, confirmed that 24 survivors have already been flown out via helicopter and specialized ambulance to neighbors including Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, and Romania. Officials expect up to 50 patients will eventually be transferred abroad for long-term care.
“Young people, totally burned, were still alive… screaming in pain,” said Edmond Cocquyt, a Belgian tourist who witnessed the aftermath.
🏛️ Investigation and Identification
The task of identifying the 40 deceased is proving agonizingly slow due to the intensity of the fire.
| Nationality of Injured | Count |
| Swiss | 71 |
| French | 14 |
| Italian | 11 |
| Serbian | 4 |
| Others (Belgian, Polish, etc.) | 5 |
| Unknown | 14 |
The French managers of the bar, a couple from Corsica, have been questioned by police. While they escaped unharmed and are currently being treated as witnesses, Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani called the use of fireworks in such a confined space “irresponsible,” signaling that accountability will be a top priority for investigators
