By Lions Roar News World Desk
GALLE, SRI LANKA (January 2, 2026) — Sri Lanka’s ambitious mission to overhaul its aging rail infrastructure reached a significant milestone today with the official inauguration of the newly modernized Thalpe Railway Station.
The scenic coastal station is the first to be completed under the “Dream Destination” project, a nationwide initiative aimed at renovating 100 railway stations across the island. The project is a key component of the broader “Clean Sri Lanka” program, driven by a unique Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model.
🏛️ A New Standard for Public Transport
The inauguration ceremony was presided over by the Minister of Transport, Highways, and Urban Development, Bimal Rathnayake. Speaking at the event, the Minister emphasized that the project is about more than just aesthetics; it is about dignity and inclusivity for all commuters.
Key Features of the Thalpe Modernization:
- Inclusive Design: The station now features enhanced accessibility for differently-abled passengers and the elderly.
- Passenger Comfort: Upgraded seating areas, modern restroom facilities, and improved lighting systems have been installed.
- Economic Boost: As a popular tourist hub near Galle’s beaches, the refurbished station is expected to provide a cleaner, safer gateway for international visitors.
- Private Sector Collaboration: The Thalpe project was made possible through the generous financial sponsorship of Star Garments (Pvt) Ltd, demonstrating the private sector’s role in national development.
🗺️ The “Dream Destination” Vision
The project, which was launched in late 2024 following directives from President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, seeks to rebrand Sri Lanka’s colonial-era rail network into a world-class transit system.
The initiative is being rolled out in phases. Following the success at Thalpe, major works are already underway at other critical hubs, including Maradana, Kandy, and Narahenpita. The Ministry of Transport and the “Clean Sri Lanka” Secretariat are working together to ensure that these hubs balance modern amenities with the preservation of Sri Lanka’s cultural and architectural heritage.
