Walking for Humanity: Buddhist Monks Reach Georgia on 2,300-Mile ‘Walk for Peace’ Across America
ATLANTA, GEORGIA — January 1, 2026
In a powerful display of endurance and spiritual devotion, a group of Buddhist monks has completed the 66th day of their ambitious “Walk for Peace” across the United States. Having trekked over 1,000 miles since their departure from Texas, the saffron-robed group arrived in Georgia this week, continuing their mission to promote global harmony and compassion.
A Journey Rooted in Compassion
The pilgrimage began on October 26, 2025, at the Huong Dao Vipassana Bhavana Center in Fort Worth, Texas. The group, consisting of approximately 20 monks led by Venerable Bhikkhu Pannakara, plans to traverse 10 states—a total of 2,300 miles (3,700 km)—before reaching their final destination: the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C., in February 2026.
Accompanied by their beloved rescue dog, Aloka (a Sanskrit name meaning “Enlightenment”), the monks walk with a simple yet profound message. “We do not walk alone,” the group shared in a recent update. “We walk together with every person whose heart is open to peace and whose spirit has chosen kindness.”
Tragedy and Resilience
The journey has not been without its trials. In late November, while walking along a highway near Dayton, Texas, the group was struck by a vehicle. An inattentive truck driver hit the monks’ escort car, pushing it into the walking procession.
Two monks were hospitalized; one suffered severe leg injuries and required multiple surgeries. Despite this harrowing incident, the injured monks encouraged their brothers to continue. Demonstrating the core Buddhist principle of non-hatred, the group resumed their walk within days, expressing no ill will toward the driver and focusing instead on healing.
A Growing Global Following
The “Walk for Peace” has captured the hearts of a massive digital audience. Their official Facebook page now boasts over 400,000 followers who track their progress via a live map. Supporters across America have been seen lining the streets to offer food, water, and blessings as the monks pass through their towns.
The group typically walks between 15 to 20 miles a day, practicing mindfulness and simplicity. After departing Georgia, their route will take them through South Carolina, North Carolina, and Virginia.
As the world rings in the New Year, these monks serve as a living reminder that peace is not merely a destination, but a path walked one step at a time.
