COLOMBO, SRI LANKA (January 1, 2026) — In a landmark moment for Sri Lankan sports, 10-year-old table tennis sensation Taavi Samaraweera has officially claimed the World No. 1 spot in the Under-11 Boys’ category.

According to the latest rankings released by the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) on December 31, 2025, the young prodigy from S. Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia, has become the first Sri Lankan player in history—across any age group or gender—to reach the top of the global standings.

🏆 The Road to the Top

Taavi’s ascent to the summit of world table tennis follows an extraordinary year of international competition. Earlier in 2025, he had already made waves by reaching a career-high of World No. 3, but his consistent dominance on the WTT Youth Contender circuit finally secured him the top spot.

Key Career Highlights:

  • World Youth Champion: Earlier this year, Taavi made history by winning the Gold Medal in the Under-11 Boys’ Singles at the WTT Youth Contender in Lignano, Italy. This was the first-ever gold medal won by a Sri Lankan at a world-ranking table tennis event.
  • Medal Haul: Throughout 2025, he secured 10 medals across 12 international ranking tournaments, including one gold, five silvers, and four bronzes.
  • Multi-Category Success: Proving his versatility, the 10-year-old is also currently ranked World No. 11 in the Under-13 category, successfully competing against much older opponents.

🏛️ A National Hero in the Making

Taavi’s achievement has been hailed as the “greatest individual feat” in the history of the sport in Sri Lanka. Despite reaching the pinnacle of his age group, he remains grounded and focused on the future.

“I am really happy to reach the top. My biggest dream is to represent Sri Lanka at the Olympics and win a medal for my country,” Taavi shared in a recent interview.

In recognition of his unprecedented success, Taavi was recently awarded the “Most Outstanding Sports Achiever of the Year” at S. Thomas’ College, becoming one of the youngest students ever to receive the honor.
