LAO CAI, VIETNAM (December 28, 2025) – A charity trip turned into a national tragedy on Saturday morning when a passenger bus carrying a volunteer group from Hanoi overturned on a treacherous mountain road in Northern Vietnam. Local authorities confirmed that 9 people have died and 9 others were injured in the horrific accident.

The victims were identified primarily as teachers from Hanoi who were traveling to the remote Ta Ghenh village to deliver supplies and gifts to children at the Hoa Mi Kindergarten as part of a year-end volunteer mission.

📉 The Accident: A Fatal Descent

The accident occurred at approximately 7:40 a.m. on a steep, S-shaped section of road in Phinh Ho Commune, Lao Cai Province. According to initial police reports and eyewitness accounts:

  • Brake Failure: Preliminary investigations suggest the 29-seat bus (license plate 29B-614.xx) suffered a total brake failure while descending an 18% slope.
  • Impact: The vehicle reportedly gained uncontrollable speed, crashed through nearly 50 meters of safety guardrails, and flipped violently before landing crushed at the foot of the hill.
  • Casualties: Eight people were pronounced dead at the scene. The driver, a 65-year-old man from Hanoi, later succumbed to his injuries at the hospital, bringing the death toll to nine.

Rescue teams, including military units and local residents, used heavy machinery and excavators to pry open the mangled wreckage. Out of those trapped inside, only one person was found alive.

🚦 A Growing Crisis on Vietnam’s Roads

This disaster highlights the persistent danger of Vietnam’s mountainous road networks. Despite improvements in infrastructure, the combination of high speeds, steep gradients, and mechanical failures continues to claim thousands of lives annually.

The Grim Statistics (Jan–Oct 2025):

According to the National Statistics Office of Vietnam, road safety remains a significant challenge:

  • Total Accidents: 15,251
  • Fatalities: 8,515
  • Injuries: 10,204
  • Daily Average: Approximately 28 deaths per day.

While these figures represent a slight decrease from 2024, the frequency of “mass casualty” incidents involving buses and trucks remains a top priority for the Ministry of Transport.

🕯️ Tribute to the Volunteers

The news has sparked an outpouring of grief in Hanoi, where the teachers were well-known for their commitment to charity work in impoverished highland regions. The Ta Ghenh campus, where the group was headed, serves some of the most vulnerable ethnic minority children in the north.

“They were coming to bring joy to our children for the New Year,” said a local official from the Phinh Ho administration. “Instead, we are now mourning their loss. We pray for the souls of those who dedicated their lives to helping others.”
