PAUANUI, COROMANDEL (December 25, 2025) – A Christmas morning flight ended in a terrifying crash today as a light aircraft slammed into a house in the holiday hotspot of Pauanui. Neighbors described hearing an “almighty thud” as the plane veered off course shortly after take-off, narrowly avoiding a much larger tragedy.

The crash occurred at approximately 9:10 a.m. on Harvard Court, a street directly adjacent to the Pauanui Airfield.

🏚️ “A Lucky Escape”: The Impact

Witnesses at the scene, including Paul Baker who was staying at a nearby motorhome park, reported that the initial take-off seemed normal until a loud bang echoed through the coastal settlement.

The Scene of the Crash:

  • Direct Hit: The plane struck the corner of a lounge in an unoccupied holiday home.
  • Severe Damage: The impact was so violent that the aircraft rotated 180 degrees, tearing the engine and propeller completely off the fuselage.
  • Miracle Timing: Fortunately, the homeowners were not inside at the time of the crash, though they had been planning to arrive later that day.

“I thought, ‘Oh, that doesn’t sound too good,'” witness Paul Baker told reporters. “It was absolutely lucky no one was in the house. It could have been much worse, especially with no fire breaking out.”

🚑 Injuries and Emergency Response

Hato Hone St John and Fire and Emergency NZ (FENZ) arrived on the scene quickly to secure the wreckage and treat the occupants of the plane.

🔍 Investigation Pending

The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) is expected to investigate the cause of the crash. Preliminary reports from witnesses suggest the plane may have struggled during its ascent before veering into the residential zone.

Pauanui is famous for its residential airpark, where many homes have hangars and direct access to the runway. While the community is used to frequent flights, this incident has served as a sobering reminder of the risks associated with holiday flying.
