Auckland/Wellington/Christchurch, New Zealand – October 23, 2025 – A state of emergency and rare Red Strong Wind Warnings are in effect across central and southern New Zealand today, as a massive weather system batters the country, leaving vast areas without power and grinding air travel to a halt.

Lines companies and Transpower confirm that approximately 90,000 homes have been impacted by widespread power outages, primarily in the South Island, following the collapse of three major transmission circuits this morning. The outages, including a significant blackout at Nelson Hospital that triggered a crisis management protocol, have sparked urgent calls for investment in resilient infrastructure.

MetService has forecast potentially life-threatening winds, with gusts predicted to hit up to 150km/h in the Canterbury High Country and 140km/h in exposed areas of Christchurch, Wellington, and the Wairarapa.

Air Travel and Road Chaos

The extreme conditions have completely crippled air travel in the nation’s key transport hubs:

  • Wellington Airport: All flights in and out have been cancelled as of late morning, with airlines set to reassess conditions later in the afternoon.
  • Christchurch Airport: Has also experienced massive cancellations, contributing to over 100 scrapped flights nationwide.

Roads have also become hazardous. The Remutaka Hill Road (SH2) has been closed to all traffic due to 140km/h gusts near the summit. Earlier today, a dramatic scene unfolded near Porters Pass in Canterbury when a truck was filmed rolling onto its side due to the severe crosswinds.

Local Emergencies and Health Warnings

The severe weather has prompted significant public safety measures:

  • Canterbury: A local state of emergency remains in place due to the dangerous combination of high winds and associated fire risk. Environment Canterbury is also closely monitoring major alpine rivers, including the Waimakariri and Rakaia, warning that flows could reach levels seen during Tuesday’s flooding.
  • Health Warning: Health New Zealand in Canterbury has urged patients to avoid traveling for outpatient appointments unless it is absolutely safe to do so.

Lines companies have warned that some power outages, particularly in areas where crews cannot safely work at height, could last for days, urging residents to activate emergency plans.

In a precautionary move, planned strike rallies by New Zealand Educational Institute Te Riu Roa members in Wellington, Wairarapa, and Canterbury have all been cancelled due to the severity of the weather warnings.

Lions Roar News urges all residents in affected areas to take the red warnings seriously, secure loose outdoor items, and avoid unnecessary travel.
